From New York to Tanzania, the game brings people together.

As basketball fans across New York celebrate the excitement surrounding the Knicks this season, it's worth remembering that the game reaches far beyond Madison Square Garden.
Thousands of miles away in Tanzania, students at Don Bosco Technical Institutes are experiencing many of the same things that make basketball so special.

When we visited Don Bosco, it quickly became clear that basketball is a HUGE deal.
It was the talk of the town that day, with everyone hoping the men's team would advance to the local championship. The sidelines were packed. Only a handful of seats were available, so most people stood shoulder-to-shoulder around the court, cheering on their team.
The entire community seemed to come out for the game. It felt like everyone was holding their breath.
Every basket sparked a reaction from the crowd. Every foul brought an even bigger one. And, of course, everyone seemed convinced they knew better than the referees.
I've never been to a Knicks game or even an NBA game, but I imagine the energy feels much the same. Different court, different country, but the same excitement, passion, and sense of community that sports have a way of creating.
While celebrities sit courtside at Knicks games, basketball in Tanzania has its own version of courtside culture. Friends gather with drinks, families come to watch, students cheer for their classmates, and the sidelines become almost as entertaining as the game itself.
The players carry the same sense of pride you'd find on courts in New York, Miami, or Los Angeles. They celebrate big plays, joke around with teammates, and step onto the court with confidence and seriousness. Watching them play, it was hard not to notice how similar basketball culture can be, no matter where you are in the world.
However, one of the team's lead point guards had spent nearly an hour skateboarding with us earlier that day. While he was skating, his teammates kept yelling at him not to get hurt before the game.
Not sure if NBA players skateboard before their games, but maybe it's a secret trick.
One thing that stood out was how often the basketball team was included in prayer throughout the day. It showed just how much the team meant to the school and the surrounding community.
At nearly every event we attended, someone would take a moment to pray for the players and for the success of the team. It wasn't treated as just another activity. The team was something the entire school took pride in.
Across Africa, basketball continues to grow. From NBA Africa to the Basketball Africa League, more attention is being placed on the incredible talent found throughout the continent. Yet some of the most meaningful moments happen on local courts, where students gather after class simply because they love the game and the pride it brings to their community.
At Water 4 Mercy, we're proud to support students at Don Bosco through AITeC, our partnership with the Don Bosco Technical Institutes of Africa.
The Water 4 Mercy logo on these jerseys represents more than sponsorship. These jerseys were made possible by supporters who wanted students to have the opportunity to compete, represent their school, and take pride in being part of a team.
Every time they step onto the court, they do so wearing a jersey that reminds them people around the world believe in their potential.
The court may look different than Madison Square Garden. The crowd may be smaller.
But the excitement of a close game, the pride of representing your school, and the friendships built along the way feel exactly the same.
Maybe that's what makes basketball so special.
No matter where you are in the world, it has a way of bringing people together.
