The Day In Tanzania Skateboards Came Out
By Carley Belanger Pictured: Brian Eckert, Carley Belanger, and Katie Belanger with the kids. We were staying at technical school for young men in Dodoma, when Brian Eckert, who has been skating most of his life, asked one of the priests if there was any way we could check out the skatepark and maybe borrow a couple of skateboards. Father Swai kind of laughed before saying something along the lines of: “Well… just so you know, if the kids who don’t go to school hear the board

Walk 4 Water: Turning Steps Into Clean Water
CCC's adopted village, Kwa Madebe Village in Tanzania. Help us bring clean, life-sustaining water to this village of more than 3,000 residents. When several football players at Clearwater Central Catholic High School were asked to carry a bucket of water across the field, they thought it would be easy. After all, these were athletes used to intense training, weightlifting, and conditioning. But after only a short distance, reality set in.The bucket was heavy. Water sloshed ove

In less than 24 hours, I found myself moving between what the world might consider two extremes, from deep poverty to extraordinary wealth.
I started the day with Nermine and Clarice, a Kenyan leader who was born and raised in one of the communities we were about to visit. In less than an hour, we traveled from the center of modern Nairobi to one of the city’s underserved neighborhoods. As Clarice walked us through the community she once called home, the contrast was both striking and deeply humbling. It was a reminder that vastly different realities can exist side by side. But beyond the hardship, what stood out

A Leader Rooted in Purpose: The story of Naomi Jemosop Kipruto
There are some people whose presence changes the rhythm of a room—not because they try to, but because who they are naturally carries weight. At AiTeC in Embu, Kenya, one of those people is Naomi Jemosop Kipruto, who comes from Mogotio in Baringo County. What follows is her journey—told through her own words, shaped by her experiences, and powered by the path she has carved for herself to become a leader at AiTeC. Pictured right Nermine and Naomi. Naomi’s interest in agricult

A Visit with the Cloistered Carmelite Nuns and Their Growing Agricultural Project By Carley Belanger
If you are anything like me, you may not have heard the term cloistered nun before, let alone been in the presence of one. I was fortunate enough to meet an entire community of twelve. But what is a cloistered nun? The internet defines a cloistered nun as a woman who dedicates her life to prayer, contemplation, and religious devotion while living mostly separated from the outside world. The key word is cloistered, meaning kept away from the outside world, sheltered. And in th

From Tomatoes to a Motorcycle
One of Water 4 Mercy’s goals has been to engage more men in their communities, encouraging them to take an active role in building a better future instead of waiting helplessly for change or sitting idly while the women fetch the water. In some villages, women even face domestic abuse because men become upset that they were gone for so long and assume they were up to something, when in reality, they were simply out getting the water. Since clean water has been provided, male

The Black Mamba Watering Hole By Carley Belanger
We live in a world where getting 10,000 steps a day has become a must, a goal, a trend, almost an addiction. We walk to close our rings, hit our targets, and maybe look a little more like the fit influencers we see online. I’ve done it too, pacing through airports to make sure I hit that magic number, frustrated if I don’t. But during a recent visit to Chizaga Olomelok, a remote village in Tanzania, I realized something that changed the way I think about movement entirely. Fo
